MountainRim

A new kind of coffee sleeve

Challenging the Common

Patent Pending

Since 1995 the common coffee sleeve has barely changed.

MountainRim breaks this stagnation by incorporating “interactive folding”, providing a better grip and experience, decreasing the chance of spillage whilst on the go.

A NEW EXPERIENCE

It was while I was visiting a senior’s home that the idea came to me. Talking with an elder that had difficulties holding her cup of coffee. I noticed the scarceness of a better grip with many products. So I began my research and development of improving her morning experience. Not yet realising that the sleeve would actually be helpful for all users and even a company to stand out.

PROCESS

Inspired by the elder lady and her difficulty of griping objects, and noticing the stagnation and lack of assistance in the market.

I chose the to-go coffee cup to improve.

The paper walls are thin and lacking a grip,

increasing the possibility of spilling.

I began by looking at the shape of the cup and how I could

improve the grip by playing with the surface and its structure.

After experimenting with the potential of changing the shape of the cup, I saw that there was a bigger opportunity of creating a product for the cup.

So I looked in to changing the coffee sleeve

Through prototyping and testing I found that using origami and folds provided a structural support for the cup and preserved the sleeves flat properties

Additionally, the unique shape stands out from competitors while providing a more ergonomic hold for consumers

Manufacturing

Visiting production plants of coffee sleeves, I made sure that this design would fit to current production systems. Although I also looked in to providing a solution to off cut material waist

Because of the designs unique property to fold to the cup, the print is able to reduce off cuts

Using the die-cut method, the design can easily adapt to current manufacturing plants.

Material testing was also done to find a suitable eco card stock, with a tree planting program set in place in relation to sleeves production.

Completing the project with branding and logo.
